Abstract

Anecdote-telling has a significant place in Turkish folk culture. Having been passed on from generations to generations for thousands of years and having lived in the oral tradition, anecdotes cannot be deserted from the society from which they originated as they reflect the sentiments, thoughts, humour, ability of reasoning, intelligence of their respective society. People of Ellek village from Düziçi, Osmaniye are known for their intelligence, craftiness, hard-work and extrovert character in the region and have been subject of many anecdotes underlining such characteristics. In this study, Ellek anecdotes originated as an expression of sentiments, intelligence, naivete, craftiness of the people of Ellek village of Düziçi – Osmaniye have been compiled in their natural environment as a primary oral culture products by using observation and interview methods. These compiled anecdotes have been treated based on the functional folklore method which is one of the content-centered folklore methods. We attempted to localize these anecdotes within the anecdote-telling tradition of Çukurova region.
