Abstract

This study is intereseted in the fact that how the male tailors see and evaluate both their jobs and master-apprentice relationship. It analyses the data collected via in-depth interviews made with 20 male master tailors who are trained in master-apprentice relationship and registered to Chamber of Tailors in Mersin. In the first stage of the study, the culture of tailoring and the importance of making studies about tailors is pointed out. Research method and space are introduced in the second stage. In the third stage of the study, the social-demographic features of the male tailors are described. Views and assessments on training conditions of them, the job they do, the changes in mastership, craftship and tailoring are presented. Tailoring is a line of work which has been existed since the ancient era of humankind. Tailoring is an occupation which has the sense of art and craftship. It is dressing up the bodies and serving to the bodies with handicraft works. According to the male master tailors, there are three different tailor types as trained from the cradle, merchant and who making retrofit. In the era when the tailoring was a respected job, the male master tailors had began to work as an apprentice instead of going to school. Following the apprenticeship, they worked as foremen. They have opened their own stores after they have learned the details of the occupation and returned from military service. They have trained both apprentices and foremen. However they have not trained apprentices in their stores in recent years. They earn money only from retrofitting.
