Abstract

Having always accompanied humanity during its historical advancement, horses were on the forefront of the wars that changed the history of the world and they also became the indispensable elements of transportation and trade. In the last a few centuries, however, mechanisation has caused them to gradually leave our lives. With its unique characteristics, Anatolia has always become a geography where many horse breeds are mixed and new breeds with different characteristics are developed. Among those horse breeds, one which is known with its endurance is the Çukurova Horse. Meeting some part of the cavalry need of the Ottoman army as well as agricultural activities on the fertile ground of the Çukurova land, this special breed that attracted attention with its strength compared with other breeds also had a unique beauty with its greyish colour. In spite of these, in the end of a process which started with endless wars in the final years of the Ottoman State and continued with such changes as mechanisation and hybridisation, now this breed is on the verge of extinction just like other Anatolian horse breeds. The current study attempts to examine the situation of the Çukurova Horse, which is currently placed under preservation, in the 19th and 20th centuries and the reasons for its diminishing.
