Abstract

STATE, PHARMACY AND MEDICINE POLICY: MERSIN CASE STUDY
Database of the study is based on qualitative field research with self-employed pharmacists in Mersin. In this field research, 15 in-depth interviews were conducted with 15 independent pharmacists. 11 of the 15 pharmacists engaged in the study are male and 4 of them are female. In the first part of the interviews, the socio-demographic characteristics of the pharmacists were identified. In the second part, the pharmacists’ views into the state were revealed, and lastly the pharmacists' approach towards pharmacy and medicine policies were discussed. The findings of the research reveals that for the pharmacists the state is a body which reduces profit margin, eliminates the rights to issue prescription medicine, and dominates the pharmacy profession. According to the pharmacists, the state sees pharmacy as a strategic and professional vocation in distribution of medicine. However, the pharmacist is more than a person who takes the medicine from the shelf and gives it to the patient. The pharmacist is the person who takes care of the patients and provides to them a primary health care. The state is trying to nationalize the medicine policy.
