Abstract

Giulio Mongeri who was one of the important representatives of the First National Movement in Turkey designed various types of buildings such as St Anthony of Padua Church , Maçka Palace, Taksim Memorial’s Plinth and Tekel Headquarters, however bank buildings designed by the Italian architect were dominant in number. Ottoman Bank, İş Bank and Ziraat Bank buildings in Ankara designed by Mongeri had contributed to the built environment of the new capital and bank design during the Early Republican Period. The Italian architect also designed bank branches for Ziraat Bank, of which buildings in five cities (Adana, Aydın, Manisa, Kütahya and Eskişehir) were argued to be similar. This study investigates Mongeri’s design principles for bank buildings through Ottoman Bank and İş Bank buildings in Ankara and Ziraat Bank building in Adana. It is revealed as a result of the examination on the original drawings, photographs and surveys that, Mongeri developed common design principles for bank buildings located on corner plots such as the relationship between the main entrance and the central customer hall, façade ornamentation and emphasis on entrances. It is also revealed that Ziraat Bank Adana branch reflects the design principles of Mongeri and is a fine example of the 1st National Movement with the entrance designed from the corner, façade ornamentation and architectural details.
